CRHS 2020 Fall Sports & Summer (Non-contact) Condioning program update

Updated Wednesday September 9
September 9, 2020

Good Morning Parents and Student Athletes,

I hope all of you had a great day of fall sport practices yesterday!  While an early September day on the calendar, it certainly felt like a mid August one!  It was still great to see the athletes out there again!

I just wanted to remind everyone that today is Wednesday, and therefore a district remote learning day.  The building will not be open for any reason on the district’s remote learning Wednesdays. The buildings will be closed to all groups allowing the custodial staff to properly conduct their deep cleaning of the buildings. Therefore student athletes must come to practice dressed and prepared to begin.  All practices today will be held after school at their regularly scheduled times, unless notified by your coaches differently.  Please be sure to check your sport websites (Google Classrooms, HUDL, etc.) or communications from your coaches regarding practice schedules.  We ask that you arrive to practice NO MORE than 15 minutes ahead of schedule.  In the fall of COVID19, being early has a new meaning for all of us.

I’ve re-attached for you a document that I sent out last week, listing information hopefully useful to many of you regarding after school athletics. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12We3-GSbyNO_NlDpOunLBCjGBGYV5EFzxYgFKNJxBcM/edit?usp=sharing

Lastly, below is also a quick checklist to make sure ALL student athletes are bringing to practice every day.  These should be considered another “part of their uniform” and simply brought daily.  Student Athletes must wear a mask walking onto and off the field.  They will also be asked to bring a personal bag will the following items in it at all times:
      • Personal water bottle, with name clearly labeled on it
      • Extra mask
      • Personal towel
      • Bottle of hand sanitizer
      • Smartphone for check in.

If you have any questions that did not appear to be answered in the document, please do not hesitate to reach out and inquire!

Sincerely,
Todd Petronio
Athletic Director - CRHS

Good Afternoon Parents and Student Athletes,

I hope all of you are doing well and trying to enjoy the late summer heat.  I wanted to share with all of you the most recent update regarding Athletics at Coginchaug Regional High School this fall.  CIAC and the CT Department of Health (DPH) met last evening and failed to come to an agreement, but did make some progress in the meeting.

At this time all sport conditioning sessions have been postponed indefinitely by CIAC and the CT Department of Public Health. Furthermore, all athletic practices have been paused and will no longer begin on August 24th (Football), nor August 27th (All other sports).  Instead, the CIAC has delayed the start of all fall sports until Saturday August 29th as their first day of practice.

On this past Wednesday, the Region 13 Board Of Education voted to endorse the most recent CT Department of Public Health recommendations for school based athletics which was sent to the CIAC on August 13th.  In this recommendation from DPH, no athletic activity, including non-contact conditioning, would occur until after two weeks of in-person learning begins, or approximately on September 17 in Region 13.  In addition, those Aug 13th recommendations also postponed football and volleyball to later in the school year.

The CIAC plans to submit additional modifications to the CT Department of Public Health early next week for their approval.  Upon receiving updated DPH and CIAC guidelines, we hope to have further guidance regarding athletics in Region 13 this fall.

Stay positive - and try to enjoy the last few days of summer!

Sincerely
Todd Petronio
Athletic Director

Good Afternoon Parents and Student Athletes

Due to impending Tropical Storm Iasias due to hit CT later this evening, ALL Fall sport summer CONDITIONING sessions have been CANCELLED for Tuesday (8/4) AND Wednesday (8/5).  This will allow us to properly assess potential wide spread damage due to forecasted high winds later this evening and power outages.

I hope everyone stays safe during the storm.

Good Evening Parents and Student Athletes,

The hot summer heat has certainly reached Durham and Middlefield this week forcing us to cancel summer conditioning Monday and today (Tuesday)!  As many of us may be considering to get away for a break, please remember to take into account the updated Travel Information from CT.  As of today, there are 34 states, including Puerto Rico and Washingtom DC that have been recently added to Connecticut's travel ban.  If you do choose to travel to one of those regions, please make sure your child stays home from summer conditioning practice for the required 14 day period upon your return to CT.  There is no penalty for missing that time period - but for the safety of all participants, we ask all of you to adhere to the state's guidelines.  Here is the most recently link to CT's Travel restrictions.

Stay safe and stay hydrated!

July 9, 2020

Good Afternoon Parents and Student Athletes,

Coginchaug Regional High School will begin in-person summer cohort conditioning on July 13.  Please understand that everything is very fluid during this summer of COVID 19 and we are doing our best to create safe guidelines and practices for the prospective student athletes of CRHS.  Coaches and administrators are receiving new information almost daily, so I thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we all navigate through this together.

These programs will be open to prospective CRHS athletes only.  We are currently taking all the recent CIAC revised guidelines and implementing a conditioning program that is beneficial to the prospective student athletes of CRHS, while taking into account the safety concerns and social distancing guidelines of the time.  While participants will be asked to wear a mask walking onto and off the field, they will not be wearing a PPE mask during conditioning activities.  However, all of our coaches and athletic training personnel will be wearing PPE’s and practicing social distancing at all times.  If you felt that you were not ready as a parent to have your child participate, that should not concern you.  The CRHS athletic conditioning sessions are not mandatory and while recommended to begin getting your child physically conditioned, your child’s participation will not have bearing on whether or not they make a team in the fall.

In order to participate next week in the in-person conditioning program, every student athlete MUST adhere to specific guidelines and must complete the following forms and registrations:
  • Register on Family ID for their intended sport on the CRHS website PRIOR to beginning your child’s team conditioning session.
  • Every student athlete must have a valid physical exam on file with the school Nurse, Pamela Branciforte.  *Please note: The CIAC has extended the 13 month validity for sport physicals to 15 months from the date of their last physicals.  Further exceptions cannot be made at this time.  Physicals MUST be submitted directly to the School Nurse and cannot be accepted by your team’s coach.  A drop box has been made available for parents to drop off updated physicals during school hours of 7am - 1pm, Monday-Friday.
  • Every player must complete a Participation and Waiver Form prior to beginning their team’s conditioning program.  Hard Copies may also be found for printing on my athletic website.
  • Anyone who has recently traveled, must adhere to the State of CT’s travel guidelines before beginning or resuming conditioning programs with their team.

Due to COVID 19 lack of contact with coaches and fellow student athletes, the CIAC has allowed schools to conduct out-of-seasoning conditioning programs beginning July 6.  CRHS has selected to begin these activities on July 13.  These programs are optional.  Students that do choose to participate will be placed in cohorts, or groups of 10 and will remain with that cohort throughout the conditioning period of Aug 2nd, 2020.  At which time, CT & the CIAC is expected to enter Phase 3 - subject to change.

The purpose of the cohort is to monitor social distancing and health of each participant while conditioning them for the upcoming sport season.  As with all group and team activities, there is the possibility that the virus and other potentially harmful pathogens will be shared and diseases can be contracted.  Conditions have been put into place to minimize and potentially control the spread.

  • Participants will remain with the same cohort for entire cohort window (July 6 - Aug 3)
  • Participants MUST check in DAILY with Athletic Trainer each day prior to beginning their conditioning session to complete their daily check in procedures and questionnaire.
  • Social Distancing must be practiced during the cohort conditioning sessions
  • Participants are NOT permitted to visit or intermingle with other cohorts at any time during the conditioning sessions
  • Participants will wear a mask walking to and from the conditioning cohort, understanding that masks will NOT be worn DURING the conditioning training session.
  • Participants will bring a personal water bottle and not share it or any other item with anyone

The following schedule MUST be adhered to during the CRHS Conditioning Sessions.  Team conditioning sessions are limited to no more than 3 times a week for a 60 min period.  Teams are scheduled below beginning July 13:  Student athletes are expected to arrive 15 minutes PRIOR to their conditioning session in order to check in with the Athletic Trainer.

We would ask that you register your son / daughter on Family ID and complete the Google forms as soon as possible so that we can begin to adequately plan for the conditioning sessions.  Unfortunately, your child will not be permitted to attend the conditioning session without prior registration on Family ID, which includes having a current physical examination on file with the school Nurse.  Here is the CRHS Family ID registration which is also located on my CRHS Athletic website.

I hope all of you are staying safe and enjoying the summer weather!
